Be Social…

Have you ever wanted to generate revenue from your social media presence? Of course you have – we all have, right? We are all involved in social media in some way; granted, some more than others when it comes to updating Facebook statuses and telling the world about their day in 140 characters on Twitter, but whether its having a LinkedIn profile, or simply watching videos on YouTube, we cannot get enough of social media at the moment. So if someone came to you and said there was a new website that takes the best bits of social media and puts a money-making spin on them, I’m guessing you’ll be asking where to sign up? Well, that is exactly what new site YouGossip aims to do.
YouGossip is a website created by Glenn Morgan and Ron Czyscon, who were inspired after reading a story about a lady named Stephanie Gordan who sold a photo of the NASA take-off to the Washington Post for a measly $200, missing out on potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising impression revenues. The site is designed to enable users to profit from their social media activity. By uploading photos, videos, articles, and everything else that you would normally do on the likes of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, monetising your content based on impressions. YouGossip actually allows you to get paid for sharing – something we all do out of the goodness of our hearts every day!

Getting paid for your uploads
So how does it work? Well, pretty easily actually. You subscribe to the site, share your content, and YouGossip will share their advertising revenue with you. The more people that view your content, the more money you can make, which is paid to you on a quarterly basis in to a PayPal account.

It may sound too good to be true, but 32.5% of all revenues generated go to you, the uploader. And it is not all narcissistic either, as a subscriber you have the opportunity to set-up your account to give some, or all, of your money to a charity of your choice. Even if charitable donations aren’t your thing, YouGossip give 10% of all revenue to great charities such as the Bobby Moore Fund and the Willow Foundation.
Be careful what you upload
A lot of our time on Facebook and Twitter is spent uploading, pictures, videos and news stories that belong to other people – this will cause a problem on YouGossip. You can’t just go uploading a Lady Gaga video and watch the money roll in, because that would be copyrighting, and record labels don’t take to kindly to that sort of thing. Even covering a song may land you in hot water. YouGossip will require you to get creative, make your own videos, write your own blog posts and upload photos that you own, or have permission to share.
So will it be a success?
I guess only time will tell. YouGossip did hold a swanky launch party at the Red Bar, Grosvenor Hotel in London and have got a couple of celebrity ambassadors on board in the form of gossip column regular Katie Price and footballer turned presenter, pundit, journalist, and whatever else he is into at the moment, Ian Wright.
The concept is certainly one that deserves to be successful, and everything is in place to make it so. The website is up and running, and there are apps for Android and iOS. Of course, it is going to take a lot of help from Facebook, Twitter and Google to get the word out that it actually exists, because even I didn’t know about it until this morning, and I love me some social media gossip. But if nothing else, it is another new social media website, and we all love signing up to those!
