If you want readers to take your content seriously you will need to be an engaging writer. Nowadays there are so many people producing blogs and articles online that it really takes a bit of effort to stand out from the crowd. Most web articles are mediocre so by putting more effort into effective writing you will be giving yourself an advantage. Even fairly dry content can be brought to life if you know how to write in an engaging manner.
Tips for Writing Engaging Content for the Web
Some writers seem to have a natural talent when it comes to writing winner content; the rest of us can develop these same skills if we put the work in. Hopefully the following tips will mean that your writing will be a bit more engaging.
- Remove all unneeded words from your writing, and use adjectives sparingly. Many of us probably picked up bad habits from writing flowery essays in school, but this just doesn’t work with web content. When you have completed the first draft of your article you should go back and remove and words that aren’t needed – be merciless and you writing will benefit.
- Don’t try to fit too many ideas into one web article; it will just be confusing for the reader and you will be wasting material. Instead of thinking in terms of writing one article you should try to focus on writing a series of articles on the one topic; this will benefit both you and the reader.
- Avoid creating sentences that are too long, because these tend to be boring to read. Using short sentences mixed with medium length sentences is usually a lot more engaging and fun to read.
- Allow your personality to come through in your work and the reader will feel a stronger connection to what you have written. Stuffy formal writing has its place, but it is not the best strategy for building an audience for your website.
- Use simple words as much as possible and never try to impress the audience with your vocabulary. If you are always using words that the audience doesn’t understand they will either see you as condescending, or switch off because they just don’t get what you are saying. Only use an uncommon word if there is no alternative and offer a full explanation in simple terms.
- It is a bad idea to build an article around keywords; instead write your article and then see where you can use the chose keywords without interrupting the flow of what you are saying. Search engine optimisation should always take the back seat to quality writing if you want to produce effective writing.
- Avoid clichés and pet phrases. Most of us will have pet phrases that we use over and over again in our writing, and these can be annoying for the reader. The problem is that most of us don’t even realise we do it. Make sure you carefully go over your writing to remove these annoying repetitions and unneeded words.
