If you want your writing to be persuasive then there is a lot you can learn from copywriters. These professionals know how to sell any product or idea with just written words and this type of skill can be of benefit to most writers. This is because writing is always about selling something even if we are not looking for monetary reward. We are trying to sell our opinions and views on the world and our compensation is other people’s acknowledgment of this. If you want your writing to have power then you need to learn a few tricks from the copywriters.
How to Write Like a Copywriter
Here are just a few of the secrets that copywriters use to make their writing sell:
- Copywriting is sharp and to the point. There is no room for redundancy in this type of writing and every word needs to have a purpose in the sentence. A copywriter doesn’t waste the reader’s time with flowery prose or unnecessary descriptions. In order for writing to be effective it needs to be short and snappy.
- A good copywriter will understand their audience and know how to speak to them. This is important because if you don’t understand who you are writing for then you are unlikely to provide the right type of message. For instance, a professional looking for information on a subject will have different expectations then somebody just web surfing. If you write in a manner that is too technical you may please the professional but possibly alienate many other readers; you have to decide who you want to please.
- If you want writing to be more appealing, and easier for the reader to manage, then avoid long paragraphs. For effective writing you should keep to about to less than five sentences per paragraph; keep it to three sentences most of the time.
- Avoid using fancy words unless you need them. The problem with using a long word, when a short word would do, is that you will tend to irritate readers. There is no requirement to prove how clever you are because the fact that people are reading what you have to say shows that they are interested in what you have to say. Complicated words make readers feel stupid and they may abandon the writer because of it.
- If you want to get the reader on your side then be positive. Don’t complain about what is wrong with the world but instead offer solutions for how to make things better. If a writer is negative all the time then this can be very off putting for the reader.
- A copywriter talks directly to people’s hopes and aspirations. The easiest thing in the world to sell is dreams because people desire these intensely. If you can get your writing to speak to what people really want in life then you can be highly effective.
- Use stories as much as possible because the reader is more likely to respond to this than long explanations.
